"... where INDEPENDENT artists shine!"

It is most imperative to measure yourself against your own standard. Your greatness is your responsibility if it is so to be. Often we strive to achieve and/or surpass the marks set by others. When these goals are unmet we view them as failures. In actuality they are relatively unrealistic due to the fact that they were derived from another person’s perspective. No one else should possess the power to will your destiny. This is a personal and exclusive privilege.
History has shown us that the greatest individuals of time were defined by their own terms. They were trendsetters of their era and craft, sometimes failed by their peers but held in the highest esteem of their own. This within itself is the most gratifying reward.

"The price of greatness is responsibility." Winston Churchill

Well said!

One of the consistent problems with using your own yardstick is that no one wants to do what you stated in your title: start at 1.

Society believes and practices the instantaneous art of immediacy. Start at 1? You mean, I have to build my own? Why can't I just hitch to the success of another and make wall marks along their structure as I go?

We need to start introducing this concept to our children at the onset of their comprehension. It would eradicate some of the issues that we see rising up in adulthood.
